Becoming ill while on your cruise isn’t a pleasant experience and studies have shown you are 100 times more likely to get sick whilst travelling than you are during your everyday life. Maybe you experienced norovirus on a previous cruise and your memories of this incident still come back to haunt you. Not nice.

If like us you have very high standards when it comes to cleanliness (having once been hotel inspectors) or you are seeking to go one step further in protecting yourself, the following germaphobe-friendly travel gear ideas may just spark your imagination.

Antibacterial Wipes

Almost as important as hand sanitizing gel, antibacterial wipes are a great way can be used to clean your hands and other surfaces where germs frequently like to gather – like your smartphone, or your aeroplane tray table, in fact, most exposed surfaces and switches and handles. Individually packaged wipes are some of the handiest products for germaphobes to carry, we always have ours at the ready and can simply be popped in your pocket, handbag or backpack.

Antibacterial Hand Gel

This is the number one essential item for all germophobes. When you simply can’t wash your hands with soap and water, or if you’re somewhere with non-potable water, such as an aeroplane or a developing country—it’s always a good idea to use a squirt of hand sanitizer before drinking, eating or touching your face. Always worth another squirt every so often when travelling in a taxi, on a shore excursion or on public transport.

Toothbrush Sanitizer

Our new best piece of travel gear for germophobes. This handy little gadget avoids the issues associated with just throwing your toothbrush into your toilet bag where bacteria can multiply or worse still, leaving it exposed in your cruise bathroom to pick up faecal bacteria that gets spread like an aerosol when flushing the toilet. (That’s why you should always close the toilet lid before flushing).

This little toothbrush sanitizer uses powerful germ-busting ultraviolet light to kill up to 99 per cent of germs. It is lightweight and fits most toothbrush heads so perfect for the serious cruiser.

Phone Sanitizer

carefullyIf a simple wipe-down of your smartphone feels a bit weak, then you should take a look at one of the many devices designed to sanitize smartphones.

The battery-powered range of phone sanitizers from Phone Soap sanitizes and charges your phone at the same time, using ultraviolet light to kill up to 99.9% of all bacteria and germs that linger on your mobile phone. In addition, some units offer a USB port and one USB-C port for charging. Check specs carefully before buying.

Travel Slippers

You might feel relaxed and free wandering around your hotel room or cruise stateroom in bare feet, but this is high risk. Cruise cabin carpets and indeed bathrooms can harbour all kinds of germs, viruses and fungus and can be a breeding ground for bacteria.

This article published by ScienceDaily on ways to avoid contracting athlete’s foot highlights a list of places where you shouldn’t walk barefoot, including hotel rooms, swimming pools, gyms, locker rooms and showers.

Wearing shoes and/or socks at all times will do the trick to protect your feet from foreign carpet nasties, but it is better to protect your feet from germy floors using packable travel slippers. We like the nonskid sole of Snoozies, a type of slipper-sock that comes in a variety of wacky designs and colours. For a bit of extra cruise ship fun, why not indulge in some footwear humour with the range of Snoozies

PAPER SOAP

Hand sanitizer is a brilliant way to kill germs and viruses whilst on the move, but nothing compares to thoroughly washing your hands with soap and water. You could just carry a bar of soap around with you but an alternative is to carry some paper soap sheets in your backpack or purse. This is such a simple but very effective solution to the hand washing problem when travelling.

Easy to carry around with you, there will be times when you wished you had to discovered this earlier. This stuff is fun, too, because it magically melts into foamy, lovely-smelling suds when wet. The kids absolutely love it!

UV WAND

Did you ever wish you had a magic wand that would clean your hotel room with only a wave or two? A UV sanitizing wand is about as close as you can get to this, which uses ultraviolet light to kill germs.

As soon as you check into your cruise stateroom or cabin, or hotel room, you can wave the wand over the light switches, the doorknobs, and anything else that could harbour germs, bacteria or viruses – and then relax, knowing you’re in a clean, sanitized environment. This unit fits the bill perfectly.

Germophobe Travel Gear – Final Thoughts

This article is just our take on things based on our own experiences. We tend to be very cautious when it comes to cleanliness, germs and viruses and so we do the things mentioned in the article.
